I get undertones of sadness when I think about the moments that I never got to spend with you - but what’s worse? Tellin’ you my feelings or to die without revealing, that you got inside my head and set a fire there instead?

How about a Merthur fic in reverse?
The first time Arthur and Merlin meet is when Merlin has to save Arthur out of a raging river. He lives in a little hut nearby and treats Arthur's wounds which he got in a battle.
Arthur doesn't want to be treated with magic and Merlin respects that, but it also means his healing process is taking much longer. Arthur doesn't trust Merlin fully but has no choice. But in his time with Merlin a lot of strange people come by to seek help. With illnesses and curses and injuries. Trouble with farming or wild animals that keeps attacking their live stock. Literally anything.
And with each visitor Arthur's respect for Merlin grows, as he wouldn't charge those people more than they could spare. A few coins, or a bit of food. Maybe old clothes or a book.
After Arthur is well again and back in Camelot he still goes to visit the sorcerer that saved his live. Especially if there is another threat to Camelot Arthur drags Merlin wherever they are needed. But Merlin never stays too long in Camelot, so neither the Dragon nor Gaius can influence him about his oh so special destiny.
Anyway, Arthur brings Morgana to ask Merlin for help and Merlin at some point adopts Mordred. And if Mordred wants to learn about magical crystals Merlin shows him the crystal cave and Mordred learns how to be a seer and that brings Mordred and Morgana also closer.
And every time someone shows up at Merlin's door step and wants to join forces to rule, destroy or dominate something he just flings the door into their faces.
Um yes!
And at some point Arthur realises that Merlin makes potions and ointments… and that those are made from actual plants. He then drops by even more often just so he can live out his farm boy fantasies.
Arthur has been trying to keep “his” Merlin a secret from everyone (except for Morgana I guess) so he suspects none of the knights know him. But they all agree Arthur is all sUsPicIoUs whenever he heads off into the woods like that so they follow him. Leon goes first of course and gives Merlin that good old “if you hurt my Crown Prince—“ speech. Then Lance and Gwaine follow and chaotic magical shenanigan drunkenness ensues. So eventually they all know Merlin. So when Camelot is in GRAVE DANGER Arthur decides it’s time to take the Knights to his secret boyfriend sorcererbuddy and he plans this whole speech about acceptance and first impressions and prejudice only for Percival to go “MEEEEEEERLS” before bear hugging the guy.
